Chlorine Gas Detector Singapore

Chlorine (CL2) is a greenish-yellow gas that has a very pungent odour similar to the smell of bleach. It irritates the mucous membrane and the liquid burns the skin. It is detectable in concentrations of as low as 0.2 parts per million (ppm) and by smell at 3 ppm. Coughing and vomiting may occur at 30 ppm and cause lung damage at 60 ppm. 1000 ppm is fatal level after a few deep breaths. As the chlorine is heavier than air and in areas with limited ventilation or air movement it will often accumulate and spread through low-lying areas. Chlorine is very toxic and reactive. It may explode or form explosive compounds when exposed to substances such as ammonia, hydrogen, natural gas or turpentine.

Long-term exposure to chlorine may result in corrosive to the respiratory tract. A severe, short-term exposure may cause long-term respiratory effects. It is corrosive and can cause severe skin burns and eye damage. According to OSHA guideline, the exposure limit is:

Effects of Various CL2 Levels
Chlorine Level in PPM
0.02 – 0.2Odor threshold (varies with individuals)
<0.5No known acute or chronic effect
1Odor threshold for all individuals
1 – 10Irritation of the eyes and mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract. The severity of the symptoms depends on the concentration and length of the exposure.
3Slight irritation of the nose and throat
5Irritation of the respiratory tract and eyes

Function Of Chlorine Gas Detector

Chlorine is used in the manufacturing of many consumer products such as plastic, paper, rubber, solvents, pesticide. It is also used in industrial sector such as food processing, water purification, sewage treatment. For household, it is used in swimming pool sanitation and disinfectants. Although it has many uses it is classified as a “Hazardous Chemical”.

Gas monitoring is an integral part of environmental protection and safety program. The Chlorine gas detector will monitor gas leaks for operations in the open or confined area.

Chlorine gas detector detects the chlorine to prevent premature failure due to high levels of background Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) gas. In 5ppm (parts per million) and 10ppm ranges, the detector can sense background Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) gas that commonly causes the sensor failure in waste treatment applications.

In addition, the chlorine gas detector is also used to sense the concentration of chlorine in an area and trigger an alarm when the concentration exceeded the pre-set safety limit as set in the detector. Under such circumstances, it gives warning to the occupants to evacuate from the building.

Where to install the Chlorine Gas Detector?

As Chlorine is heavier than air, it flows close to the ground and the chlorine gas detector is installed near the ground level so as to enable it to detect Chlorine leakage swiftly. It will trigger an alarm if there is the presence of Chlorine and the occupants are supposed to react to it or evacuate from the place of incident to safety.

Advantages of Chlorine Gas Detector

As compared with other detectors, not only the cost of Chlorine gas detector is valued at a fair price, it has high sensitivity level and is value for money.
